Sentry tells you when your app breaks in front of users and gives you what you need to fix it. When an exception is thrown in a browser, server or mobile app, Sentry records the stack trace, release, environment and the steps leading up to it, and groups repeats into one issue.

You install a Sentry SDK in each part of your stack and give it a project key (the DSN). SDKs exist for JavaScript (with framework packages for Next.js, Astro, SvelteKit, Remix and many more, plus Bun and serverless runtimes), Python, Ruby, PHP, Go, Java, .NET, Rust, Elixir, Android, Apple platforms, React Native, Flutter and game engines. The SDK sends events to Sentry, which applies source maps or debug symbols to turn minified or native frames back into your code.

For a small team, one account covers error tracking, performance tracing, session replay, logs, profiling, cron and uptime monitoring, with alerts and release tracking. Data is stored in the US (Iowa) or the EU (Frankfurt). Sensitive fields are scrubbed on the server by default, and Relay, a proxy you run, can strip personal data before it leaves your network. Sentry can also be self-hosted with Docker Compose.

Limits: the hosted service bills by event quotas, so noisy apps need sampling, rate limits or spike protection. The storage region is fixed when the organization is created. Self-hosted comes with no guarantees or dedicated support and lacks spike protection, the AI features and some mobile symbolication.

I really love using Sentry because it catches and displays errors in real-time, so I can fix bugs fast without digging through endless logs. Its dashboard is super intuitive, making it easy for me to see exactly where things went wrong. The seamless integrations with other tools save me a lot of time, and it feels a lot more straightforward to set up and maintain compared to other error-monitoring solutions.

A lot of users trust Construct with their operations, and when something breaks, we instantly receive a stack trace in our DMs and emails, Sentry gives us the unified trace across the Worker, the Durable Object and the users client app, which means we're debugging one thing instead of five, and that makes our lives a whole lot easier.

Watch-outs
  • Self-hosting the full suite needs around 16GB of RAM, and some teams gave up on running it themselves. HNHN 2HN 3
  • For simple projects it feels like overkill, with a steep price and an overwhelming dashboard. PHHNHN 2
  • Frontend projects get flooded with noise from browser extensions and vague errors that need manual filtering. HNHN 2HN 3
  • It is strong on errors but weak on metrics and logs, so teams still pair it with another observability tool. HNHN 2HN 3

Questions makers ask about Sentry

Can I keep my data in the EU?

Yes. When creating an organization you choose US (Iowa) or EU (Frankfurt) storage for events, traces, replays, logs and backups. The choice cannot be changed later except by creating a new organization, and some account-level data is always stored in the US. source ↗

Can I self-host Sentry?

Yes. Sentry maintains a Docker Compose setup you can run on your own server, but it comes with no guarantees or dedicated support. It lacks spike protection, spend allocation, the closed-source AI features, and some iOS and console symbolication. source ↗

How long does Sentry keep my data?

It depends on plan and data type; for example, errors are kept 30 days on Developer and 90 days on Team and Business, while logs, profiles and spans are kept 30 days on all plans (Business adds 13 months of sampled spans). source ↗

Is Sentry SOC 2 and HIPAA compliant?

Sentry provides a SOC 2 report and an ISO 27001 certificate through its security documentation, and offers a Business Associate Amendment for HIPAA on Business plans or higher. source ↗

How do I keep personal data out of Sentry?

Server-side data scrubbing is on by default and can be configured per organization or project, the SDKs can filter data before sending, and Relay can scrub PII centrally inside your network before anything reaches sentry.io. source ↗

What stops one bad deploy from using up my quota?

Spike Protection, enabled per project, computes a threshold from your normal volume and starts dropping events when a spike exceeds it. You can also set rate limits on events and attachments. source ↗

Is Sentry free?

Yes — there is a free tier a small product can run on; paid use starts at $26/mo. source ↗

Is Sentry open source or self-hostable?

Not open source, and you can self-host it. source ↗

Can AI coding agents work with Sentry?

It serves an llms.txt docs index; it has an official MCP server (io.github.getsentry/sentry-mcp); it has an official CLI (sentry).
