“We chose AWS because Slashy has demanding background workloads and email-processing infrastructure that need reliable, flexible compute. Its breadth lets us run and scale specialized services without forcing everything into one deployment model.”

Amazon Web Services
Amazon's cloud platform, offering compute (EC2, Lambda, ECS), managed databases, storage and hundreds of other services, billed per use.
Amazon Web Services is Amazon's public cloud: a catalog of separately billed building blocks you rent by the hour, request or gigabyte instead of buying servers. For a small SaaS the usual pieces are EC2 virtual machines or Lambda functions for code, S3 for files, RDS or Aurora for a managed relational database, and CloudFront in front as a CDN.
The model to understand is that every service is an API inside your account. You create resources in a Region you choose, connect them through a VPC network, and grant access with IAM roles and policies. You drive it from the web console, the CLI, infrastructure-as-code (CloudFormation or the CDK), or SDKs for JavaScript, Python, Java, Go, .NET, PHP, Ruby, Rust, Kotlin, Swift and C++.
What matters to a small team: Regions spread worldwide, each built from at least three separate Availability Zones; managed versions of databases, queues and email so you don't run them yourself; Lightsail, a simpler fixed-monthly bundle of VPS, containers and databases for when the full console is too much; and Budgets, which alerts you as actual or forecast spend approaches a limit you set.
The main limit is the shared responsibility split: AWS secures the underlying cloud, while the configuration you put in it (networking, permissions, patching your instances) is yours. Without someone comfortable with IAM and VPCs, a managed platform is usually quicker to get right.

What makers say
155 makers on why they use Amazon Web Services, in their own words on Product Hunt.
AWS S3 was the perfect solution for hosting GTA Radio's audio files. With 17 radio stations streaming continuously, I needed reliable, scalable storage that could handle traffic spikes on launch day. S3's CDN integration, pay-as-you-go pricing, and 99.99% uptime SLA give me confidence that users will always have access to the radio streams. The cost-effectiveness for media storage is unmatched - I can serve hours of audio content for pennies. Plus, the global edge locations ensure low latency streaming for users worldwide.
GTA RadioSep 2026 ↗I really like AWS because it’s incredibly reliable and offers so many different services in one place—everything from simple storage to advanced AI tools. It’s also easy to scale up or down depending on my needs, which helps keep costs down. The documentation and community support make it simpler to learn and troubleshoot compared to other platforms. Overall, I trust AWS to deliver secure, high-performing solutions that just work.

NaomaSep 2026 ↗AWS powers critical parts of GateOS with reliable, scalable cloud infrastructure. As we built features ranging from AI-powered learning workflows to real-time collaboration, AWS gave us the flexibility to scale efficiently while maintaining performance and security. Its extensive ecosystem and developer tooling allowed our small team to focus on building a better experience for learners rather than managing infrastructure.

Alternatives to Amazon Web Services
All alternatives by situation →Questions makers ask about Amazon Web Services
How long does the free plan last, and what happens at the end?
New accounts on the Free plan get credits to spend over up to six months. The account closes by itself after six months or when the credits are used up, whichever comes first, and you are only charged if you switch to the Paid plan. source ↗
Which regions can I put my data in?
AWS runs 39 geographic Regions with 124 Availability Zones, and you pick the Region for each resource. Each Region has at least three physically separate Availability Zones. source ↗
Is AWS GDPR-compliant for an EU customer base?
AWS's GDPR data processing addendum is part of its Service Terms, and it includes the EU standard contractual clauses, which apply automatically when customer data moves outside the EEA. Which sub-processors handle your data depends on the Region and services you choose. source ↗
Can I store health data (HIPAA) on AWS?
Yes, for services on AWS's HIPAA-eligible list. AWS supports covered entities and their business associates processing protected health information under HIPAA. source ↗
What uptime does AWS commit to?
For EC2, AWS commits to 99.99% monthly uptime per Region when your instances run across two or more Availability Zones, and 99.5% for a single instance. Falling short earns service credits. source ↗
How do I avoid a surprise bill?
Set up AWS Budgets. It alerts you when actual or forecast cost passes a threshold you choose, and it can run actions automatically or after approval when a budget is exceeded. source ↗
Is there a simpler option than raw EC2 for a small app?
Amazon Lightsail bundles VPS instances, containers, storage and databases at a predictable monthly price, with a simpler console than the rest of AWS. source ↗
Who is responsible for security?
AWS secures the infrastructure ("security of the cloud"). You secure what you build on it ("security in the cloud"), such as access permissions, network rules and operating system patches on your instances. source ↗
Is Amazon Web Services free?
Yes — there is a free tier a small product can run on; paid use starts at Pay as you go. source ↗
Is Amazon Web Services open source or self-hostable?
Not open source, and hosted only.
Can AI coding agents work with Amazon Web Services?
No llms.txt, official MCP server or CLI found yet.
Who uses Amazon Web Services?
386 makers' products we track, each with a source, and 17 open-source projects declare it in their code. source ↗
