Polar

Open-source merchant of record aimed at developers: subscriptions, usage billing, license keys.

Polar is a merchant of record for software makers: it sells your product to the customer as the legal seller, so international sales tax, card processing and chargebacks are its responsibility rather than yours. On top of checkout and subscriptions it can deliver what the customer bought automatically, which is what sets it apart.

You define products (one-time, recurring, seat-based or usage-based) and attach "benefits" to them: license keys, file downloads, private GitHub repo invites, Discord roles, feature flags or usage credits. A checkout link or API-created checkout session takes the payment, Polar grants the benefits, and webhooks tell your app what changed. Payments run on Stripe underneath. There are official TypeScript and Python SDKs and drop-in adapters for Next.js, Nuxt, TanStack Start, Laravel and Better Auth.

For a small team that means usage billing through meters and events, a hosted customer portal, a fully separate sandbox environment for testing, and a guided import of products, customers, saved cards and subscriptions from Stripe. It is a hosted service only; the code is public but Polar runs the platform.

It accepts digital products and software, not physical goods, human services or marketplaces. Your account is reviewed before the first payout (Polar says up to 14 days), new accounts wait 7 days before funds settle, and payouts go to a Stripe Connect Express account, so you need to live in a country Stripe Connect supports.

“Polar stood out because it made monetization much easier and faster compared to the alternatives I tried. The profile approval process was very fast, and since it uses Stripe infrastructure, it felt reliable from the beginning. My company is a limited company, and the approval process was completed smoothly without the long waiting times or complicated back-and-forth I experienced with other platforms. What mattered most was how simple and developer-friendly the whole experience was. The interface was clean, the website and product management were easy to understand, and adding products was very straightforward. I did not have to fight with the platform just to set up payments. Polar also worked really well with coding agents. Because the platform structure, payment flow, backend communication, and product setup were clear, I was able to move faster and implement everything more accurately with agent support. For me, Polar felt like the least exhausting option. It handled the important parts of monetization, payment setup, product management, and backend integration in a complete and simple way.”

“Paddle blocks sales until domain verification clears (1–7+ days) — Polar lets you sell immediately while compliance review runs in parallel. Gumroad's fees run ~23% and PayPal had suspended their payouts. Stripe direct is cheaper but pushes VAT/MoR compliance onto me — Polar handles that plus native license-key generation for the macOS app, which the others don't offer out of the box.”

Questions makers ask about Polar

Stripe isn't available in my country. Can I still sell with Polar?

Usually yes. Polar charges the customers itself, so you only need to be in a country where Stripe Connect Express can pay you out, and that list is much longer than Stripe's own. source ↗

How long does approval take before I can get paid?

The first payout requires an account review with ID verification and a connected payout account, which Polar says can take up to 14 days. It recommends finishing your integration and having a live website before you submit. source ↗

Can I sell services or physical products?

No. Polar's acceptable use policy covers software, SaaS, digital products and paid access such as courses, private repos and Discord servers; physical goods, human services and marketplaces are not supported. source ↗

Can I move my existing Stripe subscribers over?

Yes. Polar has a migration flow that imports products and customers from Stripe, copies saved cards, and switches selected subscriptions so they renew on Polar; new sales go through Polar while old ones keep renewing on Stripe until you switch them. Stripe Connect platform accounts and Indian Stripe accounts can't use the automated flow. source ↗

If I leave, can I take my customers' saved cards with me?

Yes, through a support-assisted migration rather than a self-serve export. Customers and saved payment methods move to your own Stripe account or another PCI-compliant processor. Products and subscriptions must be recreated, and your remaining balance is held for 120 days to cover refunds and chargebacks. source ↗

How do I test without real money?

Polar runs a separate sandbox at sandbox.polar.sh with its own accounts and API tokens. You point the SDK at it with an environment option and pay with Stripe test cards. source ↗

When can I withdraw my earnings?

For organizations created since May 2026, each transaction settles after 7 days. You start withdrawals manually once your balance passes the minimum for your currency (10 USD for USD), and Stripe's payout fees apply to each one. source ↗

Is Polar free?

No permanent free tier; paid use starts at 5% + 50¢ per transaction. source ↗

Is Polar open source or self-hostable?

Open source. source ↗

Can AI coding agents work with Polar?

It serves an llms.txt docs index.
