Lemon Squeezy is a merchant of record for digital products and software: it is the legal seller to your customers, so it collects and remits sales tax and VAT, handles refunds and chargebacks, and carries PCI compliance. It was acquired by Stripe and is now part of Stripe's merchant of record work.

You create products and variants in its dashboard (single payments, subscriptions with trials, pay-what-you-want, usage-based plans) and sell them through hosted checkout pages or an overlay opened by the Lemon.js script. Your backend reads orders and subscriptions from a REST API that returns JSON:API documents and listens to signed webhooks. Official libraries exist for JavaScript and Laravel, with community SDKs for other languages.

Beyond checkout it bundles license key generation, file delivery, a customer portal, dunning emails, discount codes, an affiliate program and email marketing to subscribers. Every store starts in test mode, which covers the API too, and you activate live selling after a review. It is hosted only.

It approves digital goods it can fulfil itself and software sold through subscriptions or license keys; services, physical goods and access fulfilled elsewhere are typically rejected. In its 2026 update the team said support and product updates had slowed and that it is working on a way for users to move to Stripe Managed Payments.

“The decisive thing: Lemon Squeezy pays individuals directly — no LLC or business entity required. As merchant of record they handle VAT, sales tax, and compliance in 175 countries. For a solo indie shipping a $2.99 Mac app, that removed a year of bureaucracy. Most alternatives required forming a company first.”

“I wanted to focus on building the app, not managing global taxes. As an indie developer, dealing with international VAT and tax compliance is a nightmare. Lemon Squeezy acts as the Merchant of Record (MoR), handling all of that for me. Plus, their built-in License Key API was a perfect fit for a native macOS app. It allowed me to implement robust activation logic (LicenseManager.swift) without building and maintaining a complex backend server from scratch.”

Questions makers ask about Lemon Squeezy

How long does store approval take?

After you submit a short questionnaire and verify your identity, approval typically takes 2 to 3 business days. You can build and test everything in test mode while you wait. source ↗

What can I sell on it?

Most digital goods it delivers itself (ebooks, design assets, audio, video) and software, courses or memberships fulfilled through subscriptions or license keys. Services, physical goods and things delivered outside the platform are typically not approved. source ↗

How and when do I get paid?

Payouts are created on the 1st and 15th of each month, after a 13-day hold on each sale, and are sent to a bank account or a verified PayPal account. You can sell if you can be paid into a bank or PayPal account in one of its supported countries. source ↗

Can I migrate my subscribers from Stripe?

Yes. The team works with Stripe to copy products, prices, customers, saved cards, invoices, subscriptions and coupons, then recreates the subscriptions on an agreed date. Subscriptions from Indian Stripe accounts can't be migrated, and Link, SEPA, Bacs and ACH payment methods don't transfer. source ↗

Can I test the full integration before going live?

Yes. Test mode covers checkout with test cards, webhooks and the API; test-mode API keys only see test data, and you can copy products and discounts to live mode when the store is activated. source ↗

What are the API rate limits?

The API allows 300 calls per minute and reports your usage in response headers. source ↗

Can teammates access the store?

Yes. The owner can invite members, who see everything except team, billing, plan and payout settings; there are only those two roles. source ↗

What is happening with Stripe Managed Payments?

Stripe has been building Stripe Managed Payments with the Lemon Squeezy team, and the 2026 update says the goal is to give Lemon Squeezy users an easy way to migrate to it. No cutoff date was announced. source ↗

Is Lemon Squeezy free?

No permanent free tier; paid use starts at 5% + 50¢ per transaction. source ↗

Is Lemon Squeezy open source or self-hostable?
