FastAPI

Python web framework for building APIs with type hints, automatic request validation, and interactive docs.

FastAPI is a Python framework for building HTTP APIs. You describe each endpoint as a function whose parameters carry ordinary Python type hints, and FastAPI uses those hints to parse and validate the request, convert the response to JSON and publish an OpenAPI schema with interactive documentation pages.

It is a thin layer over two libraries: Starlette handles the web side (routing, middleware, WebSockets) and Pydantic handles data models and validation. Endpoints can be written as async def or plain def; plain functions run in a thread pool so blocking code does not stall the server. Shared logic such as database sessions or the current user is passed in through its dependency-injection system. Apps are served by an ASGI server, Uvicorn by default, started with the fastapi CLI.

For a small team, the payoff is that the request schema, validation and API docs come from one set of type hints, and the OpenAPI output can generate typed client SDKs for a frontend. It also covers background tasks, WebSockets, server-sent events, testing and OpenTelemetry. You deploy it anywhere Python runs, in containers or with multiple worker processes; FastAPI Cloud, from the same team, deploys with one command.

It is an API framework, not a full-stack one: there is no ORM, migrations, admin or user system. The docs point you to SQLModel or any other database library, to its OAuth2 and security helpers for building auth, and to tools like Celery for heavy background jobs.

“FastAPI's async-first architecture with Pydantic validation and automatic OpenAPI generation helped a lot without implementing things manually. We're handling thousands of concurrent requests with really good response times. The dependency injection makes our service layer clean, while the built-in middleware stack handles CORS, authentication, and request context out of the box. Also, the automatic type checking and validation have caught bugs before they hit production.”

Questions makers ask about FastAPI

Which databases can I use with FastAPI?

Any. It doesn't depend on a database library; the tutorial uses SQLModel (built on SQLAlchemy), which works with any database SQLAlchemy supports, and you can swap in other SQL or NoSQL libraries. source ↗

Do I have to write everything with async?

No. Endpoints and dependencies declared with plain def run in a thread pool, so blocking libraries still work; use async def when your code awaits async libraries. source ↗

Does FastAPI include user accounts and login?

It gives you building blocks for OAuth2, API keys and HTTP auth that plug into the generated docs, but storing users, hashing passwords and issuing tokens is code you write or get from another library. source ↗

Can I run an existing Flask or Django app alongside it?

Yes. You can mount a WSGI app such as Flask or Django inside a FastAPI app with WSGIMiddleware from the a2wsgi package, which helps when migrating one route at a time. source ↗

How should I run it in production?

Run it under Uvicorn, either with several worker processes via fastapi run --workers N on one machine, or one process per container when Kubernetes or a similar system handles replication. source ↗

Is it enough for long-running background jobs?

Its built-in background tasks run in the same process after the response is sent, which suits small jobs like sending an email; for heavy computation the docs suggest a separate tool such as Celery. source ↗

Do I have to deploy on FastAPI Cloud?

No. FastAPI Cloud is an optional host from the FastAPI team; the framework is standards-based and deploys to any cloud provider, and you can install it without the cloud CLI. source ↗

Is FastAPI free?

Yes — it is free, open-source software.

Is FastAPI open source or self-hostable?

Open source, and you can self-host it. source ↗

Can AI coding agents work with FastAPI?

No llms.txt, official MCP server or CLI found yet.
