Laravel

PHP web framework with routing, an ORM (Eloquent), templating and queues, plus an optional paid ecosystem for hosting and admin panels.

Laravel is a PHP framework for building web applications and APIs. It aims to cover most of what a typical app needs inside one framework: routing, a database layer, auth, queues and scheduled jobs, real-time events and testing.

An app is a set of routes pointing to controllers, Eloquent models (an active-record ORM over a query builder, with migrations), Blade templates or a JavaScript frontend, and services wired through dependency injection. The artisan command line runs setup and maintenance tasks. Official starter kits scaffold login, registration, password reset and email verification on top of Fortify, with a React, Vue or Svelte frontend through Inertia or a Livewire frontend. It can also serve as an API backend for a separate SPA or mobile app, using Sanctum for token or cookie auth.

Useful pieces for a small team: queues with database, Redis, SQS or Beanstalkd drivers; first-party support for MariaDB, MySQL, PostgreSQL, SQLite and SQL Server; Octane, which keeps the app in memory under FrankenPHP, Swoole or RoadRunner; and, since Laravel 13, an AI SDK for text, tool-calling agents and embeddings. You can host it on any PHP server or use Laravel's own platforms, Cloud and Forge.

Version 13 requires PHP 8.3 or later. Each major version, released yearly, gets 18 months of bug fixes and two years of security fixes. Long-running workers and Octane must be restarted on each deploy unless the host does it for you.

What makers say

46 makers on why they use Laravel, in their own words on Product Hunt.

We chose Laravel because it provides a mature ecosystem, excellent developer experience, strong scalability, and rapid development capabilities. Features such as queues, scheduling, authentication, caching, and a rich package ecosystem allowed us to focus on building SkyLive instead of reinventing infrastructure. Laravel also enables us to move quickly while maintaining clean and maintainable code.

Watch-outs
  • The framework is a huge codebase on a dynamic language, which some see as a maintenance and type-safety risk next to Go. HNHN 2
  • PHP's shared-nothing runtime makes worker concurrency, memory use and real-time workloads harder to tune. HNHN 2

Questions makers ask about Laravel

Which databases does Laravel support?

It has first-party support for MariaDB, MySQL, PostgreSQL, SQLite and SQL Server; MongoDB works through a package maintained by MongoDB. source ↗

Can I use React or Vue with Laravel?

Yes. The official starter kits offer React, Vue and Svelte frontends via Inertia, or Livewire, with TypeScript, Tailwind and shadcn components; all of the code lives in your app for you to change. source ↗

Can Laravel be just an API for my Next.js or mobile app?

Yes. The docs describe Laravel as an API backend handling auth and data for a separate frontend, with Sanctum providing session-cookie auth for SPAs and scoped API tokens for mobile apps and third parties. source ↗

Do I need Redis for queues?

No. Queues run on a relational database, Redis, Amazon SQS or Beanstalkd through the same API; Horizon, the queue dashboard, is Redis-only. source ↗

Do I have to host on Laravel Cloud or Forge?

No. Any server with PHP 8.3+ and the required extensions works, for example behind Nginx or FrankenPHP; without Laravel Cloud you set up a process monitor to restart queue workers and other long-running services. source ↗

How long is each version supported?

Major versions come out about once a year; each gets bug fixes for 18 months and security fixes for two years, and minor releases should not contain breaking changes. source ↗

Can users sign in with social accounts, passkeys or SSO?

Yes, by picking the WorkOS AuthKit variant of a starter kit, which replaces the built-in auth with Google, Microsoft, GitHub and Apple login, passkeys, magic links and SSO; it needs a WorkOS account. The built-in kits already include TOTP two-factor auth. source ↗

Which regions does Laravel Cloud run in?

Laravel Cloud offers nine regions across the US, Canada, Europe and Asia Pacific. source ↗

Is Laravel free?

Yes — there is a free tier a small product can run on; paid use starts at $5/mo (Laravel Cloud). source ↗

Is Laravel open source or self-hostable?

Open source, and you can self-host it. source ↗

Can AI coding agents work with Laravel?

No llms.txt, official MCP server or CLI found yet.
