Ruby on Rails

Ruby web framework with conventions for database access, routing and views, built for building full-stack apps quickly.

Ruby on Rails is a full-stack Ruby framework for building web applications, organized around convention over configuration: file names, class names and database tables follow fixed patterns, so most wiring needs no setup code.

The core pieces are Active Record (models mapped to tables, with associations, callbacks, validations and migrations), Action Controller (handles requests and responds with HTML or JSON), Action View (templates mixing Ruby and HTML) and a routing DSL built around resources. The default frontend is Hotwire: Turbo and Stimulus update pages with server-rendered HTML, including over WebSockets, instead of a JavaScript single-page app. You can also generate an API-only app with rails new --api.

A new app includes jobs (Active Job, with Solid Queue keeping jobs in the database), email, file uploads to cloud storage (Active Storage), WebSockets (Action Cable), a database-backed cache, and an authentication generator for login with User and Session models. SQLite is the default database; PostgreSQL and MySQL are selectable when creating the app. It ships with a Dockerfile and Kamal, a deploy tool that puts the containerized app on any Linux server over SSH.

The limits are in the conventions and the release policy. Code that works against the conventions gets awkward, and the generated auth covers login rather than a full sign-up and account flow. Each minor release gets bug fixes for one year and security fixes for two, so you need to upgrade regularly.

  • A mature gem ecosystem means most common features, like authentication with Devise, are an install away. PHHN
  • Its conventions constrain the choices an LLM makes, so agent-written Rails code comes out consistent. HNHN 2
  • Developers credit it with putting developer happiness first. HNHN 2
Watch-outs
  • Ruby's runtime is slow, so scaling Rails often means throwing more instances at the load. HNHN 2
  • Its implicit magic is hard to understand, and customizing beyond the conventions gets difficult without knowing the internals. HNHN 2

Questions makers ask about Ruby on Rails

Does Rails come with authentication?

Yes, as a generator. bin/rails generate authentication creates User and Session models plus the login controllers and views, hashing passwords with bcrypt; sign-up and account settings are built on top in a follow-on tutorial. source ↗

Can I use Rails only as an API for a React or mobile frontend?

Yes. rails new my_api --api creates an app with a slimmer middleware stack and no view or asset layer, meant to serve JSON. source ↗

Which databases can I use?

SQLite is the default for new apps; you can choose another adapter such as PostgreSQL or MySQL with rails new --database=..., and connections are set in config/database.yml or a DATABASE_URL variable. source ↗

Do I need Redis for background jobs?

Not by default. Solid Queue stores jobs in your database and runs them in a separate process, which the Puma web server can start and stop for you in a Kamal deployment. source ↗

How do I deploy a Rails app?

New apps include a production Dockerfile and Kamal, which deploys the container to servers you give it by IP address over SSH, with zero-downtime deploys; managed platforms also work. source ↗

How long is each version supported?

A minor release gets bug fixes for one year and security fixes for two years after its first release; after that you are on your own until you upgrade. source ↗

Do I need a JavaScript framework for interactive pages?

Not by default. Rails uses Hotwire, where Turbo swaps in server-rendered HTML and streams updates over WebSockets and Stimulus adds small bits of JavaScript; Hotwire Native extends the same approach to mobile apps. source ↗

Is Ruby on Rails free?

Yes — it is free, open-source software.

Is Ruby on Rails open source or self-hostable?

Open source, and you can self-host it. source ↗

Can AI coding agents work with Ruby on Rails?

No llms.txt, official MCP server or CLI found yet.
