Backend Framework

Pick the framework that serves your API or server-rendered app, when your frontend framework's own server routes aren't enough.

The real choice

Minimal router or batteries included. Minimal frameworks handle HTTP and leave the database, auth and admin to you; batteries-included frameworks give you ORM, migrations, auth and background jobs with one set of conventions, at the cost of learning them.

Before you choose

How to approach it

If your frontend framework already has server routes, you may not need a separate backend at all. When you do, choose within the language you picked: a minimal router for a small API, a batteries-included framework when the backend is the product (many models, an admin, jobs, emails). Batteries-included frameworks save a solo maker the most time on CRUD-heavy apps.

Common mistakes
  • Building a separate API server when your frontend framework's server routes would cover the handful of endpoints you need, doubling what you deploy.
  • Assembling auth, validation, ORM and jobs from separate libraries on a minimal router for a CRUD-heavy app that a batteries-included framework gives you on day one.
  • Doing slow work — AI calls, emails, file processing — inside the request handler instead of a background job, so requests time out under load.
