“Modelence backends are powered by MongoDB”
DatabaseMaker says so +1 · source ↗
MongoDB
Document database; Atlas is the managed cloud version.
Works with AI agents:llms.txtMongoDB stores data as JSON-like documents instead of rows in fixed tables. A record can hold nested objects and arrays, and documents in one collection need not share the same fields, so hierarchical or changing data is stored the way code uses it.
The model: a cluster holds databases, databases hold collections, and collections hold documents queried with MongoDB's own query language and aggregation pipeline, not SQL. Writes to a single document are atomic, and multi-document ACID transactions are available when you need them. Every Atlas cluster is a replica set, usually three nodes with automatic failover, and can be sharded later. Official drivers cover Node.js, Python (PyMongo, plus a Django backend), Java, Kotlin, Go, C#, PHP (including Laravel), Ruby and Rust.
For a small team, Atlas (the managed cloud) adds full-text and vector search on the same data, automated backups on paid clusters, live migration from an existing MongoDB deployment, and clusters that can span several regions or cloud providers. It runs in most AWS regions as well as Google Cloud and Azure. MongoDB itself can also run on your own servers, as the free Community Edition or the commercial Enterprise Advanced.
Limits: there are no SQL joins or foreign keys, so relationships are modeled by embedding or by $lookup in aggregations, and that schema design needs thought up front. The free Atlas cluster cannot be backed up, sharded or connected privately, is capped at 500 connections, and may be deactivated when idle.

“We chose MongoDB for thegro.ai because modern outbound data isn’t clean or predictable — it’s dynamic, layered, and constantly evolving. From enriched lead profiles to campaign signals and CRM activity, we needed a flexible schema that could adapt as our product grows. MongoDB gives us the speed, scalability, and structure we need to handle complex AI-driven workflows without rigid constraints.”

What makers say
85 makers on why they use MongoDB, in their own words on Product Hunt.
Atlas Search gave us full-text search with fuzzy matching, prefix guards, and scoring in the same database as the belief store. No separate search infrastructure, no sync lag, no operational overhead. For a local-first tool that ships as a single Docker Compose file, adding a separate Elasticsearch or Typesense container would have undermined the zero-configuration promise. MongoDB let us keep the entire stack: persistence, encryption, and search all in one place. Client-Side Field Level Encryption was the other deciding factor. Belief content is sensitive, it's a structured model of how someone thinks and works. CSFLE let us encrypt belief content at the field level before it reaches the database, which means even if someone gets access to the raw database files they can't read the beliefs. That's a hard requirement for a privacy-first local tool and MongoDB was the most straightforward path to it without building custom encryption middleware.

Alternatives to MongoDB

Questions makers ask about MongoDB
Does MongoDB support transactions?
Yes. Operations on a single document are always atomic, and multi-document ACID transactions work across collections, databases and shards. MongoDB notes that embedding related data often makes them unnecessary. source ↗
What are the limits of the free Atlas cluster?
One free cluster per project, running in a subset of regions with fixed memory and storage. It has no backups (use mongodump instead), no sharding, no private endpoints or peering, and at most 500 connections, and Atlas may deactivate it when idle. source ↗
Can I move an existing MongoDB database into Atlas?
Atlas cannot take over management of an existing deployment, but live migration in the Atlas UI can copy data from a replica set or sharded cluster into an Atlas cluster, and you can also import with scripts using the official drivers. source ↗
Which clouds and regions does Atlas support?
Atlas runs on AWS, Google Cloud and Azure; on AWS it supports every region except China and US GovCloud. A cluster can span several regions or providers, and you can move it to a new region with a rolling migration. source ↗
Is my data encrypted in Atlas?
Yes. Cluster storage and snapshots are encrypted at rest with AES-256 by default, and TLS 1.2 or 1.3 is required for all connections and cannot be turned off. source ↗
Is Atlas SOC 2, HIPAA and GDPR compliant?
MongoDB's trust center lists SOC 2, ISO 27001, 27017 and 27018, HIPAA and GDPR among the frameworks Atlas complies with. source ↗
Can I pause a cluster I am not using?
Paid M10 and larger clusters can be paused for up to 30 days at a time, after which Atlas resumes them automatically. source ↗
Is MongoDB free?
Yes — there is a free tier a small product can run on; paid use starts at $0.011/hour. source ↗
Is MongoDB open source or self-hostable?
Not open source, and you can self-host it.
Can AI coding agents work with MongoDB?
It serves an llms.txt docs index.
