Snowflake

Cloud data warehouse on AWS, Azure or Google Cloud that bills separately for storage and for compute warehouses you start and stop.

Snowflake is a managed data platform for analytics: you load data from your app, product events and other sources into one place and query it with SQL, without running any servers. It runs in the AWS, Azure or Google Cloud region you choose when you create the account.

The model to understand: storage and compute are billed apart. Data sits in compressed storage charged per terabyte per month, and queries run on virtual warehouses, compute clusters you size from X-Small up. A running warehouse consumes credits per second, with a one-minute minimum each time it starts, and nothing while suspended; by default warehouses suspend when idle and resume when a query arrives. The dollar price of a credit depends on the edition and region.

For a small team: one place to join app, billing and analytics data in SQL, drivers for Python, Node.js, Go, JDBC, ODBC and .NET, data sharing with other Snowflake accounts, and Snowflake Postgres, which runs a Postgres instance on a dedicated VM next to your warehouse data.

Limits: there is no ongoing free tier, only a 30-day trial. Costs follow how long warehouses run and how large they are, so a warehouse left running or sized too big is the usual surprise. It is a commercial, cloud-only service with no self-hosted option, and Enterprise features such as multi-cluster warehouses and longer Time Travel cost more per credit.

Questions makers ask about Snowflake

Is there a free tier?

No ongoing free tier, but a trial account needs only an email address and no payment details. It lasts 30 days or until the free usage balance runs out, after which the account is suspended until you add a card and upgrade. source ↗

How does Snowflake pricing work?

Compute is billed in credits, and an X-Small warehouse uses 1 credit per hour, doubling with each size up. On demand, a credit costs $2.00 on Standard, $3.00 on Enterprise and $4.00 on Business Critical in AWS US East; standard storage there is $23 per TB per month. source ↗

Do I pay while nothing is running?

A suspended warehouse uses no credits, and auto-suspend and auto-resume are on by default, so an idle warehouse stops billing after its suspend timeout. Storage is still charged for the data you keep. source ↗

Can Snowflake be my app's main database?

Snowflake's warehouses are built for analytics, but it also offers Snowflake Postgres, which runs a Postgres server on a dedicated VM managed by Snowflake that you connect to with any Postgres client. source ↗

How do I connect from my code?

Snowflake provides drivers for Go, JDBC, .NET, Node.js, ODBC, PHP and Python, which your application uses to run queries and other operations. source ↗

Is Snowflake free?

No permanent free tier; paid use starts at $2.00 per credit (Standard, AWS US East, on demand). source ↗

Is Snowflake open source or self-hostable?

Not open source, and hosted only.

It serves an llms.txt docs index.
