Bolt
AI app builder that generates and runs full-stack web apps in-browser from chat prompts, made by StackBlitz.
Bolt builds websites, web apps and mobile apps from a chat in the browser. You describe what you want, an AI agent plans and writes the code, and the running app appears next to the chat, with nothing to install.
The development environment runs inside your browser tab on WebContainers, StackBlitz's technology for running Node.js in the browser, so the files, dependencies and dev server are all local to the page and you can open the code and edit it as Bolt writes it. Bolt is limited to JavaScript: any frontend framework plus Node.js on the backend; Python or PHP backends are not supported. Mobile apps are built with Expo.
Bolt Cloud supplies the rest without outside accounts: hosting on a free bolt.host address or a custom domain, databases with auth, file storage, secrets and server (edge) functions, and domain purchase. You can connect Supabase or deploy to Netlify instead. Every prompt saves a version you can restore, projects download as a zip, and a GitHub connection backs up commits and supports branches. The code is yours to use commercially.
The main limits are the browser itself: full editing needs Chrome or another Chromium browser (Safari gets read-only code and hosted previews), and phones can't use code view or the database. There's no public API or CLI, and no supported way to move a Supabase database into Bolt Database.

Themes that recur in makers' words and Hacker News comments, each linked to what it summarises, with how Product Hunt tags its reviews.
- Code generation, editing and live preview in one browser tab make it fast to go from idea to working demo with no local setup. PHHN
- Auth, database and hosting come together in a day, and it pairs well with Supabase. PH
- Strong at design, producing clean layouts and frontends when you have no idea where to start on UI. PHPH 2HN
- Apps tend to collapse after a few features beyond the initial scaffold, with bugs it cannot fix despite repeated attempts. HNHN 2HN 3
- It burns tokens fast: one instruction can drain a million tokens on a small codebase. HN
- Generated single-page apps expose little content to search engines and AI crawlers. HNHN 2

Questions makers ask about Bolt
Which languages and frameworks can Bolt build with?
JavaScript-based ones. Any frontend framework that runs in the browser, with Node.js on the backend; PHP, Python and other non-JavaScript backends aren't compatible. source ↗
Can I build a mobile app?
Yes, through the Expo integration. Put "mobile app" in your first prompt so Bolt sets up an Expo-compatible project from the start. source ↗
Does Bolt work in Safari or on a phone?
It works, with gaps. In Safari the code view is read-only and previews are hosted instead of running in the browser; on mobile, code view, project settings, version history and the database aren't available. source ↗
What happens if my free site gets too much traffic?
Free hosting allows 10 GB of bandwidth and 333,333 requests a month with no way to raise it on that plan; past that, the site goes offline until the month ends. Free sites also show a "Made in Bolt" badge and can't use a custom domain. source ↗
Can I take my code out of Bolt?
Yes. Download the project as a zip to work on in your own editor, or connect a GitHub repository that Bolt commits to automatically, with branches. Code made with Bolt is yours, including for commercial use. source ↗
Can I switch from Supabase to Bolt Database later?
Not with a supported flow; there's currently no migration path from a Supabase database to Bolt Database. source ↗
Does Bolt have an API or CLI?
No. There's currently no public API, CLI or SDK for controlling Bolt from outside the product. source ↗
Is Bolt free?
Yes — there is a free tier a small product can run on; paid use starts at $25/mo. source ↗
Is Bolt open source or self-hostable?
Not open source, and hosted only.
Can AI coding agents work with Bolt?
No llms.txt, official MCP server or CLI found yet.
