Trae
An AI code editor with an agent window, a SOLO mode where the agent plans and builds a task end to end, and a plugin for VS Code and JetBrains IDEs.
Trae is an AI-first code editor. You can work in it like a normal IDE, with an editor, terminal, debugger, Git and VS Code extensions, or hand a task described in plain language to an agent that searches the codebase, plans the steps and makes the changes. It is aimed at developers who want an agent-driven editor in a VS Code-style environment.
It has two windows that share projects, chat history and settings: an IDE window for editing code yourself, and an Agent window for running several agent tasks at once, across projects, and handing long tasks to the cloud. In the IDE window you switch between IDE mode, where you control each change, and SOLO mode, where the agent plans the task and carries it through code generation, testing, preview and a change summary. CUE handles completions and next-edit predictions. On first launch you can import your settings from VS Code or Cursor, and you can extend the agent with custom agents, skills, rules, hooks and MCP servers.
It runs on macOS, Windows and Linux, and connects to remote machines over SSH or WSL. You pick from built-in models (GPT, Gemini, Kimi, GLM, MiniMax, DeepSeek and Seed families) or add your own through an API key. A separate TraeCode plugin brings completions, chat and code edits to VS Code and JetBrains IDEs. Privacy mode keeps your chats, code snippets and AI output out of analytics and model training.
Trae is a hosted service with no self-hosted edition, and it is available only in a listed set of countries; paid plans cover a shorter list. Paid usage is billed by tokens against a monthly dollar allowance, so heavier models use it up faster. The product is also in flux: the docs now call the editor TraeCode, and the separate TraeWork app is being merged into it, with TraeWork shutting down on October 23, 2026.

Alternatives to Trae
All alternatives by situation →Questions makers ask about Trae
Which models can I use?
Trae lists built-in GPT, Gemini, Kimi, GLM, MiniMax, DeepSeek and Seed models, and you can add others from preset providers or a custom endpoint with your own API key. Seed, MiniMax and GLM models are not available to users in the United States. source ↗
How does pricing work?
The Free plan uses Auto mode only and has a limited monthly allowance; Pro ($20/month), Pro+ ($60/month) and Ultra ($200/month) include the same amount in dollar usage and let you pick models. Each request costs its tokens at the model's list price, and once the allowance runs out you can upgrade or turn on pay-as-you-go On-Demand Usage. source ↗
Is there a cheaper plan?
A Lite plan at $8/month with $8 of usage is sold in a limited set of countries. SOLO mode is not included on the Free plan. source ↗
Is my code used to train models?
Your codebase files are not used for analytics or training whatever your setting, though they are uploaded temporarily to compute embeddings for indexing and then deleted. Chats, code snippets and AI output may be used unless you turn on Privacy mode, which only applies while you are signed in. source ↗
Can I use Trae inside VS Code or JetBrains IDEs?
Yes, through the TraeCode plugin for Visual Studio Code and JetBrains IDEs such as IntelliJ IDEA, PyCharm, WebStorm and Android Studio. The plugin offers completion, code generation and editing, explanations, unit tests and bug fixes, not the full agent window. source ↗
Can I bring my VS Code or Cursor setup?
Yes. During first-time setup Trae offers to import your existing configuration from VS Code or Cursor, and you can install extensions from Trae's store, the VS Code marketplace or a local .vsix file. source ↗
Is Trae free?
Yes — there is a free tier a small product can run on; paid use starts at $20/mo. source ↗
Is Trae open source or self-hostable?
Not open source, and hosted only.
Can AI coding agents work with Trae?
No llms.txt, official MCP server or CLI found yet.
