Aiven
Managed hosting for open-source data services — PostgreSQL, MySQL, Valkey, Kafka, OpenSearch and ClickHouse — on the cloud provider of your choice, billed by the hour.
Works with AI agents:llms.txtAiven runs open-source databases and data services for you, so you get a working PostgreSQL, MySQL, Valkey, Kafka, OpenSearch or ClickHouse without operating the servers. Each service is a separate instance with its own plan, and several can run side by side in one project.
The model to understand: every service runs on dedicated virtual machines in the cloud and region you pick — AWS, Google Cloud, Azure, DigitalOcean, OVH or UpCloud — and the plan sets the node count, CPU, memory and storage. The hourly price covers the machines, network traffic, backups, upgrades and patching. You connect with the engine's normal drivers, so a Postgres app uses the same driver it would anywhere else.
For a small team: a free Postgres or MySQL to start, standard Postgres extensions like PostGIS, point-in-time restore from the Startup plan up, database forks, connection pooling, high-availability plans with automatic failover, and management through a web console, CLI, API and Terraform provider. Larger teams can run Aiven-managed services inside their own cloud account (BYOC).
Limits: services are always-on machines billed while powered on, with a one-hour minimum, so there is no scale-to-zero. The Free and Developer plans can't choose a cloud or region and have no connection pooling or integrations, and adding disk beyond the plan's size costs extra.

Alternatives to Aiven
All alternatives by situation →Questions makers ask about Aiven
Is there a free plan?
Yes, for PostgreSQL, MySQL, OpenSearch, Kafka and Valkey, with no credit card and no time limit. Free services are capped in size and can be powered off if unused for a long time; you can power them back on. source ↗
How is a service billed?
By the hour while it is powered on, with a one-hour minimum, invoiced monthly. The plan price includes virtual machines, network traffic, backups and maintenance; extra storage and features like PrivateLink cost more. source ↗
What do the PostgreSQL plans include?
Free gives 1 CPU, 1 GB RAM and 1 GB storage; Developer ($5/month) raises storage to 8 GB. Startup (from $75/month) moves to larger dedicated machines on any of six clouds with point-in-time restore; Business adds a second node with automatic failover, and Premium a third. source ↗
How do I migrate an existing Postgres database?
Aiven recommends its open-source aiven-db-migrate tool, which copies the schema and then uses logical replication to keep the databases in sync, falling back to pg_dump when logical replication isn't possible. Logical replication needs PostgreSQL 10 or later on the source. source ↗
Can I run Aiven in my own cloud account?
Yes, with Bring Your Own Cloud on AWS, Google Cloud or Azure. Aiven still manages the services, your cloud provider bills you for the infrastructure, and you enable it through Aiven's sales team. source ↗
Is Aiven free?
Yes — there is a free tier a small product can run on; paid use starts at $5/mo (Developer). source ↗
Is Aiven open source or self-hostable?
Not open source, and hosted only.
Can AI coding agents work with Aiven?
It serves an llms.txt docs index.
