Drizzle ORM
Lightweight TypeScript ORM that stays close to SQL; schema defined in TypeScript.
Works with AI agents:llms.txtCLIDrizzle ORM is a TypeScript library for working with SQL databases. You get typed queries without a separate schema language or code generator. Tables are declared as ordinary TypeScript, and queries read almost like the SQL they produce.
There are two layers. The core is a SQL-like query builder (select, insert, joins, subqueries) that maps closely to the generated SQL; the Queries API on top fetches nested relations and, according to the docs, always compiles to exactly one SQL statement. Drizzle has no dependencies of its own and talks to the database through the standard driver you choose, with support for PostgreSQL, MySQL, SQLite, SingleStore, SQL Server and CockroachDB and hosted options such as Neon, Supabase, PlanetScale, Turso and PGlite.
Migrations come from the companion CLI, Drizzle Kit. It can generate SQL migration files from changes to your TypeScript schema and apply them (generate and migrate), push the schema straight to the database for fast iteration (push), or introspect an existing database into a TypeScript schema (pull). It also ships Drizzle Studio for browsing data, seeding helpers, and generators for Zod, Valibot and other validation schemas. Everything runs inside your app; there is no hosted service.
Limits: because the API stays close to SQL, you need to know SQL to use it well. The project is moving to v1.0 (currently a release candidate), which restructures the migrations folder, rewrites Drizzle Kit's snapshot format and introduces Relational Queries v2, so existing projects face an upgrade step.

“Drizzle kit push is amazing. no need for migrations”
Database Access & ORMsMaker says so · source ↗“The best and most dev friendly ORM we've used. We actually started on prisma, but their `migrate dev` functionality started to take minutes per deployment. Drizzle helps you avoid it, and locally their `push` functionality is great for rapid prototyping, and their `migrate` and `deploy` function works flawlessly. Also it does not require generating a local package, just an amazing developer experience. I hope to donate when the company gets a bit more revenue hehe.”

Alternatives to Drizzle ORM
All alternatives by situation →Questions makers ask about Drizzle ORM
Which databases and drivers does Drizzle support?
Drizzle works through standard drivers for PostgreSQL, MySQL, SQLite, SingleStore, SQL Server and CockroachDB, with guides for providers such as Neon, Supabase, PlanetScale, Turso, PGlite, Bun SQL and Netlify Database. source ↗
Do I have to write migrations by hand?
No. Drizzle Kit can generate SQL migration files from your schema and apply them, push schema changes directly to the database, or pull an existing database's schema into TypeScript, so it fits both code-first and database-first workflows. source ↗
Is drizzle-kit push safe to use in production?
The docs call push the best approach for rapid prototyping, and note that many teams and solo developers use it as their main migration flow in production. Teams that want reviewable history use generated SQL files instead. source ↗
How do I load related rows without writing joins?
Use the relational Queries API, which returns nested related data without manual joins or mapping and, according to Drizzle, always runs exactly one SQL query. source ↗
What changes when upgrading to Drizzle v1?
Running drizzle-kit up converts the migrations folder to a new per-migration layout; Drizzle Kit moves to DDL snapshots with checks for conflicting migrations across branches, and relational queries move to v2 with a new relations definition. source ↗
Can I use an existing database with Drizzle?
Yes. drizzle-kit pull introspects the database and writes the matching Drizzle schema in TypeScript, so you can keep managing the schema with your existing tools. source ↗
Is Drizzle ORM free?
Yes — it is free, open-source software.
Is Drizzle ORM open source or self-hostable?
Open source, and you can self-host it. source ↗
Can AI coding agents work with Drizzle ORM?
It serves an llms.txt docs index; it has an official CLI (drizzle-kit).
