OpenHands is an open-source coding agent and the tooling around it. You give it a task in plain language and it works in a workspace, reading and editing files, running shell commands and opening pull requests. It is aimed at developers who want an agent they can run on their own hardware with any model, and who want agents to keep working on schedules or events, not only while they watch.

There are several ways in. The CLI (installed with uv or as a binary) runs the agent in your terminal, has a headless mode for scripts and CI, and plugs into Zed, JetBrains IDEs and VS Code through the Agent Client Protocol. Agent Canvas is a browser-based control center: it manages conversations, files, terminals and model settings, and connects to one or more backends, such as your laptop, a Docker container per conversation, a VM, Kubernetes or OpenHands Cloud. Besides its own agent, Canvas can run Claude Code, Codex or Gemini CLI, and it has automations triggered by a schedule, GitHub events or webhooks, with prebuilt ones for issue-to-PR, PR review and Slack monitoring. A Python SDK underlies both.

It works with any model LiteLLM supports, including local models through Ollama, LM Studio or vLLM, so you pay your provider directly. OpenHands Cloud is the hosted version: you sign in with GitHub, GitLab or Bitbucket, and it adds hosted sandboxes, Slack and Jira integrations and a cloud API. Its Individual tier is free, with your own key or OpenHands' model provider at cost. Enterprise adds multi-user access, SSO and self-hosting in your VPC.

The open-source version is designed for a single user; the docs say it has no built-in authentication or isolation for shared, multi-tenant use. How safe it is depends on the backend: a local process backend can touch anything your user account can. Result quality depends on the model you connect, and Agent Canvas is labelled beta.

Questions makers ask about OpenHands

Is OpenHands really open source?

Yes. The OpenHands repository is MIT-licensed, and the open-source version is a full, single-user OpenHands that runs locally with your own LLM key, with a local web GUI, a CLI and the Software Agent SDK. source ↗

Which models can I use?

Any model supported by LiteLLM, through a provider API key, a LiteLLM proxy, OpenRouter, or a local server such as Ollama, LM Studio, vLLM or SGLang. The docs say it needs a powerful model, and they publish recommendations across Claude, GPT, Gemini and open-weight models. source ↗

What does OpenHands Cloud cost?

The Individual plan is free for one user with up to 10 daily conversations; you bring your own LLM key or use the OpenHands LLM provider, which charges model usage at cost with no markup. Enterprise, as SaaS or self-hosted in your VPC, has custom pricing. source ↗

Can I use it in VS Code, JetBrains or Zed?

Yes, through the Agent Client Protocol, which the docs mark as experimental. Zed and JetBrains IDEs support it natively, VS Code needs a community ACP extension, and on Windows the CLI and IDE integrations need WSL. source ↗

Can it run Claude Code or Codex instead of its own agent?

Yes. Agent Canvas runs the OpenHands agent by default but can run Claude Code, Codex, Gemini CLI or any other agent that speaks the Agent Client Protocol. source ↗

Can a team share one self-hosted instance?

Not safely with the open-source version, which is meant for a single user on their own workstation and has no built-in authentication, isolation or scalability for multi-tenant use. Multi-user deployments are an Enterprise offering. source ↗

Is OpenHands free?

Yes — it is free, open-source software. source ↗

Is OpenHands open source or self-hostable?

Open source, and you can self-host it. source ↗

Can AI coding agents work with OpenHands?

It serves an llms.txt docs index; it has an official CLI (@openhands/agent-canvas).
